Last week we took a group of them to Abisko Riksgrensen mountains in Sweden to learn and practice mountain sledding. Few photos tell more than thousand words.

It is quite funny for mountain people to see the endless flat land and even more to realize that there are no villages, no civilization. This part of Eastern Lapland is truly remote and that is definitely an experience when coming from crowded Central Europe!

Logistics is a key word for everything – how do you get a fuel if there is no Shell or Statoil behind every corner? Or how do you get your beer if the closest shop is “only” 106 km? And you can see reindeer running in the forest! Wow! Magic, pure Lapland magic.

If nature and wilderness is definitely one of the highlights of the tours, we cannot go on without talking about the second one – the people. This warm friendliness of locals is something that you experience only in these small places far from the city life.

One night we stay at Mrs. Tuula’s tiny guest house and accommodation is including her grandmother-like care about the food and everything. Her mushroom sauce is so good that the boys are licking the plates! And Tuula is looking at us with a satisfaction in her eyes, smiling silently and checking if some one has a room for more food. Her husband Veli-Matti comes to greet the guests, too and with these tiny things they make the guests feel really special.

Another night takes us to Tulppio village, which is run by … a lady. Yes, there is no one else there beside her! She has to handle tractor if needed, clean the only road from snow if needed, she is running a small bar (which is more crowded during the summer), she is raising sledge dogs and if needed – fighting with the wolves. A totally tough lady. Some men from our group just can’t believe she is capable of doing everything her own!

Last adventure day takes us to Kemihaara, which is quite literally situated in the end of the world. After Kemihaara is only a Russian border nothing else. Married couple Helena and Juhani runing the house, have 13 children! And after Helena has served a bear meat soup for the lunch, she has got all the hearts on the table. The picture of the poor bear is standing on the piano next to the dining table, so all you eat here really comes from here. Helena serves wild pig and moose stew for the dinner.

The third highlight of the tour is of course snowmobile driving. The landscapes of the tour give a lot of variety, so there are no long and boring roads, you have a new little challenge after every now and then. Driving in deep snow is like surfing or cruising, it is so much fun and satisfaction! But don’t forget to be careful, because sometimes a slippery part can cause you unexpected spins. Everybody has to drive according to their abilities, this would be the safest way to do it.

We are quite often asked what is the distance of the day and if you say 100-120 km, people think it is not enough. It is always possible to drive more if you are good at it! But try first to achieve the minimum one – it is not like driving a car!

Even though the weather conditions for this tour were quite extreme, we have to say it was a hell of a good tour. Of course it was freezing cold at some points and there were challenges to start the machines, but we all did well!

And in the end of the day the temperature is something to remember. Because how often can you say – I just survived 4 days in the wilderness with close to -40 degrees C?!

Travel journalist Chris Gray had eccentric experiences in Finnish saunas, our beloved Joyride Saunabus among of them. How come Finns, so shy when talking to public, feel so free full monty in sauna?

Chris is telling in his article:

“One of the many things that I found fascinating about Finland was the country’s love affair with the sauna (or SOW-na, as they pronounced it). They’re everywhere! And I mean everywhere; even the smallest apartments often have a sauna inside.

The Finns are not an exuberant people, but the ones we met lit up with glee when they talked about saunas. Apparently there are 2 million saunas in this country of 5 million – enough for everyone to get their sweat on whenever and wherever they want.”

Since I am originally Estonian, I have born and rise with Sauna-cult also. Most probably it would be a hard argument among Estonians and Finns, who has more saunas , who has better saunas or who can stay in sauna longer. Sauna has always been a typical add-on for a normal household.

But after spending some more time with our Northern neighbors I have to admit, Finns definitely are kind of obsessed with sauna!

As Chris continues:

“I felt like I never quite got Finnish sauna etiquette. I’m probably your typical American prude, in that I have no interest in walking around naked around strangers.

Most of the hotel saunas specifically forbid swimsuits, so I clutched my towel in the sweltering heat. The Finnish women – so shy on the trains or talking in public! – had no such modesty. Full monty ruled the day.”

It is not really about curiosity of seeing other people naked or enjoying yourself among the strangers, it is more like a primal instinct of freedom and power.

The best sauna adventures are quite spontaneous and there is some sort of tribal mystic in having a hot sweaty sauna and to run naked to the cold lake or sea water afterwards. I guess sauna helps to express our true nature.

So, as a mental note for the people coming to visit us in Finland: there is a big difference in having a Finnish Sauna, having Finnish in sauna and having Finnish sauna in Finland with the Finns.

It definitely is an experience!

Read the full Chris Gray article from “Chris Around the World” blog.
